The shape of it
About
Yokohama Chinatown is one of the Kanto region's liveliest places to mark Lunar New Year, but the organiser has not yet announced its 2027 street programme. Previous editions have included lion and dragon dances, performances and a celebratory parade; none of those dates should be assumed for 2027 yet.
Highlights
- Japan's largest Chinatown as a regional Lunar New Year focus
- Lion and dragon dances and a parade are previous-edition traditions, not yet confirmed for 2027
- Lantern-lit streets and one of Japan's best concentrations of Chinese restaurants
Plan it well
- Yokohama is about 30 minutes from Tokyo; Motomachi-Chukagai station on the Minatomirai Line drops you in Chinatown.
- Wait for the official 2027 page before planning around a parade, countdown or performance.
- Come hungry - the celebration is as much about the food stalls and restaurants as the dances.
- Streets get packed during the parade, so arrive early and pick a spot along the route.
