About

A national holiday celebrating young people who turn 20 (the traditional age of adulthood). Local governments hold coming-of-age ceremonies, and city streets fill with women in elaborate furisode kimono and men in suits or hakama.

Highlights

  • Coming-of-age ceremonies (seijin-shiki) held by every municipality
  • Stunning furisode kimono on display around shrines and ward offices
  • A photogenic, low-key public holiday rather than a tourist festival

Plan it well

  1. Government offices, banks and many businesses are closed on this Monday; major attractions stay open but are busier.
  2. Visit a popular shrine such as Meiji Jingu in the morning to see newly-minted adults in formal dress.
  3. Be respectful when photographing ceremony attendees — ask before close-ups.
