Japanese New Year (Oshogatsu)

Oshogatsu is Japan's most important holiday period. January 1 is a national public holiday, and the country effectively slows to a halt from roughly December 29 to January 3 as families gather, eat osechi cuisine and make hatsumode, the first shrine or temple visit of the year.

Coming-of-Age Day (Seijin no Hi)

A national holiday celebrating young people who turn 20 (the traditional age of adulthood). Local governments hold coming-of-age ceremonies, and city streets fill with women in elaborate furisode kimono and men in suits or hakama.

Golden Week

Nationwide

Golden Week is a cluster of four national holidays at the end of April and start of May, creating Japan's biggest domestic travel season. In 2027 it runs Showa Day (Apr 29) through Children's Day (May 5), letting many workers take a near week-long break.
