The shape of it

About

One of Tokyo's biggest hanabi taikai, the Edogawa Ward fireworks light up the Edo River with around 14,000 shells across themed acts. The show opens with a famous burst of roughly 1,000 fireworks in just five seconds, and plays out as a friendly rivalry with Ichikawa City on the Chiba bank opposite.

Highlights

  • Around 14,000 fireworks, including a signature opening of about 1,000 shells in five seconds
  • Dual show across the Edo River, with Ichikawa (Chiba) firing from the opposite bank
  • Themed musical segments running through the evening

Plan it well

  1. Access via JR Ichikawa Station (about 15 min walk) or Toei Shinozaki Station; expect packed trains afterwards
  2. Stake out a free riverbank spot in the late afternoon, or buy reserved seating early
  3. Bring a picnic sheet, water and a hand fan — the riverbank is hot and shadeless before dusk
