The shape of it
About
For two days in early July, around 120 stalls fill the grounds of Sensō-ji selling potted hōzuki (ground-cherry / Japanese-lantern plants) with their glowing orange husks. The market coincides with Shiman-rokusen-nichi, when a single prayer at the temple is said to count for 46,000 days of merit.
Highlights
- Around 120 stalls of glowing orange ground-cherry plants packing the Sensō-ji grounds
- Shiman-rokusen-nichi (10 July): one visit said to equal 46,000 days — roughly 126 years — of merit
- Limited yellow-husk Sensō-ji wind-chime and lucky-charm souvenirs sold only during the fair
Plan it well
- Go early — stalls open around 8am and pack up once the plants sell out, often before evening
- Plan for July heat and humidity: bring water, a fan and sun cover for the open temple courtyard
- Combine with Nakamise shopping and the nearby Kaminarimon gate while you're in Asakusa
