The shape of it
About
One of Asia's largest art and design festivals, held twice yearly at Tokyo Big Sight since 1994. Its open-submission model lets any creator exhibit, so thousands of booths showcase handmade art, illustration, fashion, sculpture and crafts alongside live performances and food.
Highlights
- Roughly 6,500 booths per day from independent artists and makers across every medium
- Open-submission format — anything goes, from fine art to weird experimental crafts
- Live art performances, music, and a wall where artists paint in real time
- Food stalls and a relaxed, browse-and-buy atmosphere unlike a curated art fair
Plan it well
- Bring cash — many independent sellers don't take cards — and a bag for purchases.
- Doors run roughly 10:00-18:00; arrive early on day one for the freshest stock from popular artists.
- Buy tickets online via eplus or pia to skip the door queue.
- It's family- and beginner-friendly; you don't need to know the art scene to enjoy wandering.
