The shape of it

About

From late November through winter, the island of Enoshima is transformed into the 'Jewel of Shonan' as the Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse and the surrounding Samuel Cocking Garden are draped in lights. It is rated among the Kanto region's three great illuminations, with the tower wrapped in cascading bulbs shaped like Mt. Fuji.

Highlights

  • The Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse strung with 70 m of lights in a Mt. Fuji silhouette
  • The Samuel Cocking Garden transformed into a purple-lit 'jewelled forest'
  • One of Kanto's three great winter illuminations
  • Winter Tulips and the Valentine Island events extending the season into February

Plan it well

  1. From Tokyo, take the train to Fujisawa or Kamakura, then the Enoden line to Enoshima (about 1-1.5 hours total).
  2. Most light-ups run from around 5 PM to 8 PM (later on weekends and holidays).
  3. Combine with nearby Kamakura for a full day trip, and dress warmly - the island gets windy at night.
  4. Buy a combined Garden + Sea Candle ticket for the best views from the tower observation deck.
