The shape of it
About
Each November, the northeastern shore of Lake Kawaguchi blazes with autumn colour during the Momiji Festival. The famous Momiji Corridor - a tunnel of crimson maples beside the lake - is lit up after dark, with food stalls and Mt. Fuji as the backdrop.
Highlights
- The Momiji Corridor tunnel of crimson maples beside Lake Kawaguchi
- Evening illuminations of the maple trees after sunset
- Mt. Fuji rising behind the lake and autumn foliage
- Food stalls and local specialties at the festival site
Plan it well
- From Tokyo, it's about 2 hours to Kawaguchiko by direct bus from Shinjuku, or train via Otsuki.
- Aim for mid-November for peak colour; check local foliage reports as timing shifts each year.
- Visit at dusk to catch both daytime colour and the evening light-up of the corridor.
- Weekends are busy and roads congest - go early or use the sightseeing buses around the lake.
