The shape of it
About
Japan's highest peak (3,776 m) is only open to climbers for a short official window in summer. The Yoshida Trail from the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station is the most popular route from Tokyo, with mountain huts en route and a famous sunrise (goraiko) from near the summit.
Highlights
- Climbing Japan's sacred 3,776 m volcano, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site
- Sunrise (goraiko) seen from the upper huts or summit crater rim
- Network of mountain huts along the Yoshida Trail for an overnight ascent
- Daily cap of 4,000 climbers on the Yoshida Trail keeps the route manageable
Plan it well
- Pay the mandatory ¥4,000 fee; advance booking is recommended, but the official FAQ says same-day registration places are retained.
- From Tokyo, take a highway bus from Shinjuku straight to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station (about 2.5 hours), or train to Kawaguchiko then bus.
- The Yoshida trailhead gate closes at 2:00 PM for those without a hut reservation; book a hut to climb overnight for sunrise.
- Bring layers, headlamp, cash, and altitude care; weather above 3,000 m is cold even in midsummer.
