The shape of it
About
In early summer, the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi turns purple as fields of lavender bloom against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji. Oishi Park and Yagizaki Park are the classic free viewing spots for the lavender-lake-Fuji photo. The organised Herb Festival has been suspended, but the fields remain open for self-guided viewing.
Highlights
- Fields of lavender framing Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi at Oishi Park
- Free, open-air viewing on the northern lakeshore
- One of the Kanto region's signature early-summer flower spots
- Pairs well with the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center next to Oishi Park
Plan it well
- Aim for late June to early July for peak bloom; check local tourism updates as timing shifts with the weather.
- From Tokyo, take a bus or train to Kawaguchiko Station, then the Kawaguchiko sightseeing (Red Line) bus to Oishi Park.
- Go early in the morning for clear Fuji views and to beat tour crowds and traffic.
- The formal festival is suspended, so there are no big stages or stalls; come for the flowers and the view.
