About

The Tokyo Marathon is the city's flagship road race and a World Marathon Major, sending tens of thousands of runners on a 42.195 km course past Tokyo landmarks. The 2027 edition marks the marathon's 20th anniversary.

Highlights

  • World Marathon Major course past Shinjuku, Asakusa's Kaminarimon, Ginza and Tokyo Station
  • About 38,000 runners plus an elite international field
  • Lively spectator and cheering spots all along the route
  • 20th-anniversary edition in 2027

Plan it well

  1. Entry is mostly by lottery and fills months ahead — register early via the official site if you want to run; charity slots are an alternative.
  2. Spectating is free: Asakusa, Ginza and the Marunouchi finish are great vantage points.
  3. Expect widespread road closures and packed trains on race morning — plan transit around them.
  4. Early March can be cold and windy; dress in layers whether running or watching.
